New York, New York
Think of New York and one’s mind immediately unfurls into a kaleidoscope of wonder. With the city’s reputation as a place that nourishes talent, champions dreams, and of course, fosters true love, it’s not hard to see why the city presents itself as a fertile ground for anyone who’s looking to make it in this world. As host to some of the world’s most ebullient minds, personalities and souls, its rosy depictions are further reinforced through the work of the many artists and designers who have been inspired by the city, or made it the protagonist of their work.
3.1 Phillip Lim
Nowhere was this more palpable than at New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2019 presentations. At 3.1 Phillip Lim, the New York woman is celebrated in all her enigma and complexity, and for her status as a global citizen. As she escapes the city and embarks on a nomadic journey through the desert, we are reminded of her ability to navigate life looking superbly chic. Self-informed yet perceptive of her surroundings, she fuses earthy tones, Berber textiles and bucket hats with rubber soled sandals and space-age metallic pieces on a journey beyond the city.
While escapism has its charms, some remind us that reality has its way of biting back. After showing on the Paris schedule for a brief two seasons, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler could no longer deny their inner New Yorker, and the city as their one true calling it. Backstage, Hernandez revealed that coming back to New York meant asking questions like: “What is American fashion? What feels relevant now? What do our friends want to wear, and what feels real?” The answers lie in their collection which was filled with everyday clothes made for the city’s inimitable inhabitants. Sloped shoulders, wide trousers and twisted A-line skirts made with a tie-dyed cotton, a touch of leather, and of course, denim.
CK Calvin Klein
A similar kind of good, not-so-old-fashioned practicality with an urban American twist is present at CK Calvin Klein’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection. Sartorial cues from various social and professional roles are translated into a collection of classic silhouettes, daring geometric patterns and evocative essentials.
